June 2014
SESI Digital Gallery, São Paulo
The exhibition rethinks performance as a concept of self expression and the relations it evokes between historical heritage in performance culture and contemporary digital culture, and between a psychological level and a level of expressive self representation. From the origin of the carnival tradition to VJ culture and self-portraits in social media, performative culture is an integral part of our cultural identity. Performative culture is underlying our everyday personal expressions, increasingly acted out in digital environments in which performative acts inform our social being and visual, digital language. The show unfolds between ‘performance’ with actual performed spectacles and ‘the performative’ as the construction of identity and reality through acts and actions. The artworks unfold in an unbounded, participatory exhibition context of the street – the site for our everyday performances where people’s expressions are articulated.
